QR Codes at the Reference Desk

The page of QR codes that links to each subject librarian’s LibGuide profile page has been placed at the IC desk. I’m attaching a document with the updated codes too.

What’s a QR code?
It’s a bar code that is readable by mobile devices (like smart phones) that have QR applications. We are using the QR code to link to web pages with librarian’s contact information. QR codes can also embed text and other data.

What’s the point?
This is a very small project meant to give IC some practice using QR codes and beginning to think about how we might provide information to students and faculty members that they can access using their mobile device.

What am I supposed to do with these QR code pages?
The pages will be available at the RS desk and you can use them when referring students to a specific librarian. For example, you could say that the student could scan the code to get the contact information (and office hours, location, any information that is included on a LibGuide profile).

What else can be done with QR codes in libraries?
This wiki summarizes QR code projects at a number of other libraries: http://www.libsuccess.org/index.php?title=QR_Codes
Also, C&RL News recently featured an article on QR codes as a way to reach mobile users: http://crln.acrl.org/content/71/10/526.full

Questions, ideas, and feedback
I’d be happy to demo using the pages to anyone who’d like to try but who doesn’t have a phone w/ an app to read the codes. I have a few free QR code readers on my phone. I also welcome conversations about additional QR code projects – is there an interest in an interest group? I also welcome your feedback about this QR code page – is there a way to make it more useful for students and easier to use at the desk?
